Cooking With Loretta

My mom was an amazing cook. When she died, I inherited her recipe collection. To be honest, it’s a little overwhelming: piles and piles of print-outs, cookbooks, hand-written recipes, magazine clippings, and newspaper clippings. While I know she had over 60 years to work on the collection, it is amazing to think that a person could hit on even half of these in her lifetime.

The recipe collection is one of my most valuable possessions- not just because of the recipes themselves, although some are very important to me, but because this collection is a living piece of my mom. Each recipe tells a story about her life: from how she got the recipes to her thoughts when she cooked them. And, although she probably didn’t realize it at the time, the recipes together are like a diary, full of secrets on how she honed her skills: as a chef, a hostess, and, of course, a matriarch.

So, as I begin to make my way through the 10,000 course lifetime my mom laid out for me, I am starting a cooking blog. I know many of you loved my mom (and her cooking!) too, and you might want to remember her with me.

Some weeks I might not really have anything interesting to say, but over the course of this adventure - who knows what we’ll discuss? As I post, I would love to hear your takes - Do you have a memory about that recipe? Was it actually *YOUR* recipe? Do you have a similar recipe and make it differently? Or do you just miss someone and food makes you want to talk about it?

Also - if you want to just come over and eat some food, send me a message! We can set a date. Maybe we can even cook together.
